Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. Ford joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth attempt, she was finally accepted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. The stage was her main focus, and joined The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies, that were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
